Life’s a journey and owning your own small business is a journey to.
I’m lucky, each week I get to help business owners pause and watch what they’re doing. Gaining another perspective. It’s the difference between being in the thick of a sporting contest and getting the opportunity to step out and review the situation from the grandstand. Sometimes those “ah ha…” moments are precious. Some met with laughter, occasionally a slap on the forehead (the client, not me) and at other times silence.
We all make mistakes, it’s OK! You’re OK.
Business is a learning experience. If you’ve not learned anything lately, you’re either smashing it, and if so take some time to be proud, enjoy the success and reward yourself, OR you’re it’s smashing you…
We all go through that phase from time to time. Moving beyond that ‘Groundhog Day” is critical. It’s imperative that you regain your Mojo, your zest for the business you once loved and start to rekindle that passion you have for your clients and how you help them.
You’re NOT Your Business
As the GFC started to bite and I needed to take tough decisions about the recruitment business I owned, I found that everything was becoming personal. I thought I was the business and as time passed and the business suffered, I figured I was a failure. As challenges mounted along with increasing losses, with no answers, I felt I was the problem… Pressure kept mounting, finances were challenged and I had to let the staff go, I felt I’d let them down. The pressure kept mounting…
Looking back, I realise that my thinking was actually part of the problem, more on that another day.
Later, in hindsight, each team member contributed and much of the challenge was completely outside our control, there was a GLOBAL financial crisis happening after all. And we just owned our share. Thinking I was the business, led to dark thoughts and a lonely existence.
Business is About Relationships
That’s why I created Brisbane Small Business.
Relationships can be challenging at times. Understanding that from time to time mistakes are made and making amends is a critical part of building relationships. I know, I’m not perfect and so don’t expect perfection from anyone. All I ask in a relationship is mutual respect.
That is why, in creating the group, I don’t allow advertising (during the week). All that selling gets in the way of connecting with others, finding out about them. Not what they do, about them.
I love seeing connections and friendships grow within the group. New connections being made and true relationships developing.
Small Business is about creating Lifestyle
The first part of that is to earn a reasonable income from what you do. It’s hard to be truly free if you’re struggling to pay the bills.
Of course from time to time, there could be some rough patches, yet if that is a constant pattern, maybe investing in help to grow, personally and professionally is what is needed.
Imagine having a factory and never doing any maintenance… Before long, the machines would start to slow and over time they’d simply break down. It’s the same with us as people. We’re either “green and growing or ripe and rotting” and this is where the Brisbane Small Business Expo 2016 kicks in. There’s 16 workshops to help you build your business.

- Implement some of the strategies you learn from your small business colleagues at the expo.
